HISTORY OF THE ALUMNI

The Alumni is as old as the School. It was first founded in the 1920's when the School began to function. According to those who were among the first few students of the school said Mr Lim Choon Mong, a lawyer was the original President of the Alumni's Management Committee, then known as the Serangoon Old Boys' Association.

Although the Association did not fully function as an Association, it did contribute towards building up the future Alumni.

The late Mr Nadarajoo Chatan (also known as C M Ashraf) was the man who revived the Association in 1981 after the Association was left in the doldrums when the then President, Mr Heng Siah Meng died. He was fervently passionate towards his alma mater and was sad that there was an absence of a link between the old students and the school after it was renamed Sera goon Secondary School.

So for about two years, Mr Chatan rounded up some of his fellow Serangoonians, most of them his friends and those whom he knew in the school. Five people turned for the first meeting of the new Association. A pro-tem Committee was formed, a new Constitution drawn up and approved subsequently.

From 1982 onwards the Serangoon Old Boys Association was back on its feet with the election of a full Management Committee member. From then on the Association had been holding regular yearly Annual General Meetings. Many activities were also organized for members, including yearly dinners, symposia and career talks for students etc.

In 2006, to reflect the new direction and strategy of the Association, the name was changed to Serangoon Alumni.

The Alumni is already in its fourth year. It is now planning to bringing new members from the younger cohorts. A self-renewal campaign would be conducted in 2010 or 2011 to inject new blood into the Alumni. We have brought in one new committee member. More will be inducted within the next few years.
