HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCHOOL

The Serangoon Secondary School (SSS) is the successor school to Serangoon English School (SES) which was the name used when it began 81 years ago in 1928.

The School was originally founded as a primary school. There were seven classes with a headmistress and seven teachers. This was increased to 12 classes subsequently.

Initially, the SES was the only government co-educational school in the Crown Colony. In 1937 more classes were added, and so were three higher standards. The School then provided education up to Standard Eight or Secondary Three presently for boys and girls. Successful girls and boys who completed Standard Eight went on to Raffles Girls School and Raffles Institution respectively.

Between the Japanese Occupation of Singapore from 1942 and 1945, the school served as a centre for the Japanese Higher Normal School used to train officers in the Japanese Education Service.

With the end of the war in 1946, the school suffered serious shortages in the provision of textbooks, furniture and equipment. For a time, the school functioned at the Malay School in Aroozoo Avenue.

In 1949, the School had its first School Certificate class. With this class it became a full-fledged school. One could receive a primary education starting from Primary One up to the secondary level with a Cambridge School Certificate. This would enable those finishing at the School Certificate level to go on to Raffles Institution.

Pre-university level education was introduced in 1965. Primary education had also ceased earlier in 1957. From then on, SES was strictly a secondary school.

In 1967, to cater for the school?s expansion, it moved to new and modern premises in Lowland Road. New equipment and a centralized workshop were provided for teaching of technical education for Secondary One and Two classes. The name of the School was also renamed Serangoon Secondary School.

Over the years, the school enrolment rose. The Lowland Road premises was too small to conduct remedial and enrichment classes and co-curricular activities.

Another expansion was planned, and in 2000, the school moved once again to its new and modern premises at Upper Serangoon View. The new building with its modern computerised facilities and equipment will cater to the needs of students for the future.

Presently, the school has Enrolment: 1,355 Boys: 753 Girls: 602 Staff: 121
