26th Annual General Meeting

The 26th Annual General Meeting was held on 28th March 2008 at the Conference Room, Serangoon Secondary School, 11 Upper Serangoon View, Singapore 534237.

Nine members were present at 12.00 pm. As there was no quorum, the Meeting was adjourned for one hour in accordance with the Constitution before it was called to order at 1.00 pm.

The Chairman kicked off the meeting by giving her traditional run down of what took place during the last tenure of office in 2008. The past year was an eventful one, as the Alumni joined the School in celebrating its 80th Anniversary, which culminated with a Celebration Dinner at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. The Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen was the GOH.

Membership rose, with five members being recruited, three Life and two Ordinary Members. The two Ordinary Members were from the younger age group. They are in their twenties. The Alumni is glad that they have agreed to join the Management Committee. Hopefully, they will act as catalysts to draw in members from their cohorts into the Management Committee to replace the current leadership, some of whom have given more than 20 years service to the Alumni.

Mr Richard Gomez, an alumnus also set up two – the  N I Low and an M N Campos Scholarship Funds worth $1,500.00 each in memory of the two persons, who in the words of Mr Gomez had mattered most during the formative years in the school. Later, Mr Ngiam Tong Yuen, also an alumnus, gave a donation generous of $2,000.00 to the N I Low Scholarship Fund.

In conclusion, the Chairman thanked the out-going Management Committee Members who had contributed to the smooth running of the Alumni, and the School Representatives, Mrs Joan Tan and Mr Sim Teck Kwang for their assistance at the Alumni Meetings and the Principal, for the use of the School facilities by the Alumni.

Membership Drive and Renewal of leadership

In any organization, there are those who join to contribute by serving in the management. However, there are those who are passive members. However, we require both types of members, but we would like to have some active members especially for renewal of leadership.

For those from whom we seek to inject new blood for leadership purposes, they will most likely be those who would have been established in their careers, and are prepared to serve in the Alumni Management. They would also form the foundation of our future leadership. Injecting new blood into the alumni and leadership renewal are the cornerstones of a forward looking organization.

Since 2008 and up to the first half of 2009, we recruited a total of four Life Members and three Ordinary Members. The three Ordinary Members are in their twenties. We are hoping that the three younger members will act as catalysts to pull in new and younger members into the Alumni. As their peers, these younger members will better understand what the younger members think and want. They will also be the “backbone” of  the future management team of the alumni.

The School has Two New Vice-Principals

Two new Vice-Principals were transferred to the school recently. Ms Mabel’s Junior College replaced Mr Richard Phua who was transferred to Yio Chu Kang Secondary School. The other Vice- Principal’s position, (a newly-created post),  is held by Mr Chow Kwok Onn from the Building Control Authority.

Ms Chia’s portfolio includes supervising the teaching staff and looking after the curriculum, whilst Mr Chow will handle administration and look after the support staff.

We welcome them and wish them the best.
